The WECA Housing Discrimination Task Force was formed
in February 2006. The task force is actually an extension of the work
of a previous WECA subcommittee.
In 2002 WECA received complaints from West End residents that a property
management company in the neighborhood was discriminating against people
of color who attempted to rent apartments.
A subsequent investigation by this subcommittee revealed that this company
was indeed denying black and Hispanic residents access to apartments
in certain areas of the West End. This led to a series of WECA supported
protests against the company.
The subcommittee probe also revealed that this company had been fined
multiple times by the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (
CHRO) for discriminating against people of color. The fine was always
the same amount and obviously did nothing to deter the company from continuing
its discriminatory practices.
The goal of the WECA Housing Discrimination Task Force is to introduce
legislation that will result in escalating fines for companies that are
repeatedly found guilty of the same acts of housing discrimination.
